History

Starting in the 1990s, NCSR Demokritos pioneered early steps in technology transfer and research commercialization. This included creating spin-off companies, launching key development initiatives (such as the ARIADNI Network and participation in the creation of OTENET), and establishing the 'Lefkippos' Technology Park. Before this, technology transfer services were managed by various, loosely connected structures within the Centre. Following a series of administrative reforms in 2017, Demokritos established new, interdisciplinary departments and enacted comprehensive regulatory provisions for Technology Transfer. This strategic move aimed to achieve three core goals: optimally manage and commercialize the Centre's intellectual property (IP) portfolio, attract private capital into research, and actively support entrepreneurship. Today, the Centre has secured significant patent co-development contracts with international firms (including EY Global, Qualco, and TITAN) and continues to successfully support the launch of spin-off companies that are now thriving (such as Cyrus, Nanoplasmas, and Theta Metrisis).
